Our Current Project

A Healthcare Center for Comprehensive Care

Since the fall 2022, our Primary Healthcare Center in Akpugo, a rural village in Southeast Nigeria is open. Our Healthcare Center contains an outpatient clinic, a pharmacy, an outpatient operating room, a labor and delivery room, and space for a future laboratory and basic radiology suite. A full-time local medical staff, international and local volunteer medical practitioners, and community members are employed by Equal As One representing a dynamic team that cares for all members of the community.

Where The Need Is Great

Nigeria is a country in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea.  The current life expectancy in Nigeria is only 53 years. More than 20% of all deaths are caused by Malaria infection. In fact, Nigeria has more reported cases of malaria and deaths due to malaria than any other country in the world. Other common causes of death include lower respiratory infections (like pneumonia), diarrheal diseases, and HIV. In this nation, a woman’s chance of dying from pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 120. To put that in perspective, in the United States the chance is only 1 in 7,000. Worse yet, the infant death rate is nearly 1 in 14 in Nigeria, compared to only 1 in 175 in the United States.

So many of these deaths could be prevented simply by having access to quality medical care, common medications, and community education. Equal As One hopes to save lives by bringing our Healthcare Center to this region in need.
